Crime drama based on PD James' best-selling novels about Inspector Adam Dalgliesh, starring Bertie Carvel. In January 1975, a student nurse dies during a training demonstration and Dalgliesh is sent to investigate, accompanied by his partner DS Masterson. With poisoning confirmed as the cause of death Dalgliesh questions several of the nurses, and also has a case of blackmail on his hands.

A recent death on the hospital wards becomes of interest to Dalgliesh, as he investigates the behavior of several of the nurses at Nightingale House. Masterson tells Dalgliesh that Dettinger recognized one of the senior nurses as Irmgard Grobel, a woman found guilty of murdering 122 Polish prisoners by lethal injection.

Dalgliesh travels to Dorset to visit his friend Father Michael, but it turns out the man died two weeks earlier. To make things worse, Dalgliesh learns that another resident of the estate died a suspicious death a few weeks before that.

WIth Grace dead, the future of the estate is more uncertain than ever. Wilfred organizes a vote to establish whether he should continue as the residents' spiritual adviser. Dalgliesh digs deeper into the operation's secrets.

Two dead bodies are discovered in a church - one is a former Member of Parliament, while the other is a local vagrant. Dalgliesh's investigation leads him into the world of the British nobility, where everyone seems to have secrets.

Dalgliesh digs into the Berownes' family secrets. He eventually confronts the killer - and reveals some deeply personal things about himself.
