The war swept away the old order of monarchies and empires. Now the world has to be rearranged.

Unemployment and hardship characterize the early 1920s.

Pola Negri is hostility in Germany because of her origin. She decides to accept an offer from Hollywood. Marina Yurlova can flee from the Bolsheviks to San Francisco.

The communist revolution in Germany fails again. The KPD is banned. France occupies the Ruhr area because of outstanding reparations. Hyperinflation is the result.

The world economic crisis of 1929 caused the collapse of banks, department stores and companies. Elise Ottesen fights for sexual education and women's rights. Hans Beimler's wife commits suicide.

Adolf Hitler is appointed chancellor of the Reich. The communist party is banned. Hans Beimler is taken to the Dachau concentration camp. Rudolf Höß meets Heinrich Himmler.

In 1935 the Nazis adopt the Nuremberg Laws. In Spain, a military coup under General Franco leads to a civil war. Stalin has his enemies persecuted and murdered.

Germany closes a non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union and invades Poland in September 1939. The Second World War begins. Pola Negri shoots again successful films, but is captured by the propaganda.
