Visually impaired Tom van Hulle 's father Sjoerd recently moved his his family to Hughevliet, where he became chief of detectives. Tom 'Cappie' and bratty tomboy classmate Sammy, so far his only school friend, discover a tree-house and find a strange machine hidden inside. Cappie suspects a link when he hears about his father investigating Vermeer's famous painting 'Girl with Pearl' being stolen from the local museum's exhibition, and a laying card left behind as if a calling-card, just like a set in the tree-house. He enlists wheelchair-ridden nerd classmate Siggy into the tree-house gang, to help work out what the machine is- it types braille. Cappie's team deciphers the braille messages left by the thief, presuming it's Laurens, but it's apparently a code about playing cards. So they enlist nerd classmate Ruben, a gifted illusionist, whose horrible sister invites herself, only to wine endlessly. The parents followed the teacher's advice to attend classic war movie "Hunger winter", which is interrupted in all the nation's movie theaters by an ominous message from the master criminal. Hearing a shot, the kids find Laurens missing, but he seemingly left clues pointing to his late twin Lucas's grave.

Hvaing overheard Laurens on the phone, apparently about his late brother, Cappie no longer considers him prime suspect but another victim. Indeed he's kidnapped, but by an unexpected culprit. Ruben takes the usual blame for his sister's stupidity to cover up and works out which weeks the playing cards represent, suggesting it's linked with the museum thefts. Father Sjoerd van Hulle pretends to ignore Tom's suggestion the mastermind may be blind, but instructs his detectives to search that way.

Cappie's team needs to wok out the mastermind's plan, hopefully by working out the next date from the braille messages. Cappie notices tiny cards mark on cards, from which he ends up finding a significant system, hence the date. Searching the old cemetery proves to the gang Cappie's theory that Lucius lives as his tomb is empty. His father dismisses the result as meaningless, for lack of a place. Cappie's gets its TV studio visit. The teacher is locked in the bathroom, so the kids can snoop. Their only suspect proves a genuine engineer, but they do spot a ticking 'bug', only too late to prevent it disrupting the show on air. Rubentine meets illusionist Hans Klok and successfully volunteers as his assistant.

Cappie's team realizes that the TV studio was sabotaged by young technician Jonathan, but can't prove anything, so they just follow him to Laurens's wood house. Cappie's father still refuses to believe his next prediction, a general power-cut, but is ordered to take it seriously by the minister in person, who relieves him from the case after it occurs. Only Ruben is blamed once more at home, but his brat sister finally owes up her part and stick up for him.

Cappie's team manages to get inside the manor. They free Laurens, Jonathan and Cappie. At last they discover who is behind the crimes and why. It's the Schoppen Heer.
