Two abandoned orphans grow up in Pony's Home in Michigan, the mischievous Candy and the quiet Annie. They do all they can to never get adopted and remain with each other always.

While Candy's satisfied being an orphan forever, Annie can't help wanting a mother and father. Then the two girls stumble across the kind Mr. Brighton and they learn what it's like having parents.

When Candy learns that Mr. Brighton plans on adopting her, she does all she can to assure that doesn't happen. But Annie feels differently about being adopted.

Annie now lives a rich life while Candy remains at Pony's Home. Nevertheless, they keep in contact through letters. Until the letters from Annie stop. Grief-stricken, Candy runs away into the forest where she meets someone mysterious.

Candy gets adopted by the rich Leagan family to be a playmate for their daughter. But all of Candy's hopes are crushed when she arrives as nothing turns out the way she expected.

The Leagan children continually bully Candy until she decides she's had enough and decides to run away back to Pony's Home. However, on the way she finds someone who reminds her of her mysterious Prince of the Hill.

Candy is determined to become an elegant lady, but finds herself reduced to a servant while Mr. Leagan is away. Meanwhile she learns more about the mysterious Adley family.

After the Leagan children ditch Candy in the middle of town, she meets another Adley brother: Alistair. Later it is revealed that the Adleys will be hosting a ball and the Leagans are invited, including Candy.

Candy finally meets the boy she saw at the rose gates: Anthony Brown, along with the Cornwell brothers. The three want to give Candy a good time at the ball, but Eliza (who's infatuated with Anthony) won't let that happen.

John and Sister Mary come to visit Candy, and she must hide the fact that she works as a servant and sleeps in the stable. Furthermore, she hopes she can hide the truth from Anthony.

The Brightons pay a visit to the Leagans, bringing Annie along as well. However, Annie's past must be kept a secret, putting a rift between her and Candy.

Candy is blamed for stealing from Anthony's rose garden, but she knows the truth. However, when all evidence points against her, she runs away - and happens upon another mysterious encounter.

The Leagan children attempt to frame Candy poisoning the horses, but a mysterious benefactor rescues her. She figures it must be Albert and tries to send him a letter. The next day, he comes for her.

Candy visits Pony's Home to learn that Father's Tree on Pony's Hill is to be cut down and sold. Candy and the other children are determined not to let that happen.

Dorothy is to be sent to Mexico to serve at Adley property there, much to Candy's dismay. But after the Leagan children's further framing, Candy finds herself being sent in Dorothy's stead. She seeks out help.

Despite Anthony's protests, Candy decides to keep her honor and go to Mexico. He and the Cornwell brothers discover the true culprit of the thievery, proving Candy's innocence, but they're too late.

It's a long, bitter journey, and Mr. Garcia is cruel toward Candy. They take along a poor, indebted family, but their baby is ill and Mr. Garcia won't turn back to the nearest town.

The journey turns deadly with rattlesnakes, bandits, and child kidnappers. Candy finds herself in trouble from even her travelling companion, but when things turn for worst for both of them, he must make the right decision.

Though her kidnappers treat her well, Candy is determined to escape. Meanwhile, Anthony and the Cornwell brothers hear of her abduction and set out to rescue her.

Now a daughter of the Adleys, Candy couldn't be happier. Even the Leagan children must submit, but Candy won't have them shamed like she was. Meanwhile, Anthony realizes Candy's infatuation with the Prince of the Hill and becomes envious.

With a rich lifestyle comes loads of responsibility. While Candy is stuck memorizing Adley family history, Anthony gets into a feud with Tom after an accident.

Relocated to the forest Adley mansion, Anthony trains with Tom to participate in the upcoming rodeo. However, great-aunt Elroy won't allow it and sends Candy to change his mind.

With the reward from the rodeo, Candy and Anthony venture around town to spend the money. It's their first date, but after a foreboding incident, Candy fears it may be their last.

Candy fears for the future, but Anthony reassures her and tells her not to worry. After all, the annual Adley fox hunt approaches where she'll be officially presented.

Candy's worst fears are realized. The Adleys mourn their loss, especially Candy who's stricken with nightmares and a high fever. Even so, she must fight against the Leagan children who insist on taking over their late cousin's possessions.

Candy visits Pony's Home in attempt to deal with her grief, but everything reminds her of Anthony. Jimmy, a new orphan there, bullies her for being a cry-baby. The two ultimately face off against each other to decide who's the boss.

Christmas is approaching. The owner of the land of Pony's Home, Mr. Cartwright, plans on expanding his ranches and thus drive Pony's Home out. Candy ventures with Jimmy in order to dissuade him in person, but it turns out not be so easy.

It's time to choose a new path in life. Candy learns of Mr. Cartwright's wish of adopting her, but she doesn't want to betray the Adley's. Yet they remind her too much of Anthony. And then there's the orphans wanting her at Pony's Home.

Candy is eager to become a caretaker for the children at Pony's Home, but she considers the option of whether it would be better to study first before undertaking the job, especially since the opportunity to do so at London comes up.

On the way to England, the ship receives a call for help from a capsized fishing boat, but the captain and a rich businessman stand split on the decision of coming to the rescue and risking losing the latter's important contract.

Upon arriving at Southampton, Candy is posed with entering the school with her pet raccoon Klint, visiting her elusive Grandfather William, and perpetual encounters with the striking son of the Duke of Grandchester.

Candy fails to make a good initial impression on the school principal. Or the other students, thanks to Eliza. Nevertheless, Candy hopes she can keep one new friend.

After an unusual incident at the girls' dorm, Candy finds an unexpected visitor. Patty's grandma wants to stay for a bit to see how a boarding school works since she'd been home-schooled all her life. Candy hopes she can keep her a secret.

Eliza and Neil have it out for Candy, but an unlikely rescuer comes to her aid. As much as she dislikes him, she also can't stop thinking about him. Stear and Archie invite Candy to their room where she learns more about Terry.

The students receive a day off from campus, but, thanks to great-aunt Elroy, the others leave without Candy, making her the only student left on campus. That is - except for Terry. Fortunately, Mr. Brighton comes and two go into town.

Annie arrives at Saint Paul's Academy. She notices the attention Candy gets from Archie, and while Candy reassures her that they're only friends, Archie may think otherwise - especially after seeing Candy's interactions with Terry.

An unexpected visitor enters Candy's room in the middle of the night and she is forced to steal out and find a pharmacy. On the way she stumbles upon someone she hadn't seen in a long time.

Candy, on her way to Archie and Stear's room, accidentally ends up in Terry's room where she finds a clue concerning his past. But then he catches her, and eventually, the entire backstory unfolds.

Secrets are in the air - Neil is determined to discover Candy's; Patty hopes to share her's with her best friend. Meanwhile, the May Festival approaches and Candy will get to be one of the lucky May-flower girls.

Though confined to the contemplation room, Candy won't stay in one place for long. She slips away and sets out for the zoo where she encounters more than who she expected to see. In time, she finds herself on a date.

The May Festival begins, but Candy remains confined. However, thanks to a gift from Grandfather William, she is able to escape her imprisonment and join the festivities - just so long as no one sees through the ploy.

After a fight between Archie and Terry, the former is sent to the contemplation room. Meanwhile, summer is on its way, and the girls talk about spending the holiday in Scotland. Then something happens that shakes Candy's chances of going.

In Scotland, Candy tries to return a wandering sheep to a shepherd boy when she learns he lives at the Grandchester summer home. She makes numerous attempts to see Terry, but instead finds someone else who is visiting the mansion.

Children are so different and so similar to their parents; Candy tries to reconcile Terry and his mother.

When Terry rescues Eliza from drowning, she convinces great-aunt Elroy to throw a white garden party in his honor. Nonetheless, Candy knows she won't be welcome and it ends up being a party for two.

Summer school is drawing to a close and Archie and Terry's feud turns deadlier. Candy tries to find a way to help the two of them make up.

Candy tries to avoid Terry, but after receiving a letter from Albert, she searches him out. Eliza, jealous of Candy and Terry, plans a deadly trap for the two.

Terry argues with Sister Gray about their punishments, Annie and Patty visit the Cornwell brothers to talk, Archie seeks vengeance on Terry. Meanwhile, Candy weeps within the tower walls.

Terry breaks all his ties, knowing what he must do for Candy's sake. She is released from the tower, much to her delight, until she realizes what happened.

Candy runs in with Neil, helps the Duke of Grandchester accept Terry's leaving, and even decides to help Eliza's crony, Louise. However, she is unsure about wanting to become a proper lady of St. Paul's Academy.

Candy's friends set out to stop her before her departure, but little do they know she got sidetracked and ended up far from Southampton. Now she must work to earn enough money to get there.

Candy runs into trouble on her way to Southampton, and, after smuggling herself numerous times, finds herself even farther from the port than before.

Candy must seek out a doctor's help for Susy's sake, despite Mr. Carson's distrust of doctors. She herself can assist with what she knows, but only thanks to the doctors. Hopefully Mr. Carson can realize that.

With help from a boy named Cookie, Candy finds Juskin's seafaring company who will help smuggle her across the Atlantic. She's just unsure if she can trust them. Then she hears the sound of Terry's harmonica.

Candy finds she's not the only stowaway. Cookie is on his tenth attempt and just might ruin it at well due to his carelessness. Candy risks her own success in order to save him.

Upon delivering the stowaways to the other ship, the captain halts the transfer due to a storm warning. Unfortunately, Cookie breaks his leg, and the ship is threatened with leaks. Candy learns what it means to be a true sailor.

Captain Nieven's daughter, who has been keeping company with a gang, fights to get her father's attention from the stowaways to her. She prepares a number of traps for Candy, with help from her gang friends.

Candy travels through the snow and blizzards on foot. She hears rumors of Terry visiting Pony's Home and rushes there as fast as she can, only to just miss him. She considers their paths in life.

With Miss Pony and Sister Mary away, Candy is currently in charge. But it's not going to be easy, especially when she meets the new girl Daisy and encourages her play outside, later learning that she has hemophilia.

Mr. Cartwright wants to adopt Jimmy, but Jimmy wants to stay with Candy and help out at Pony's Home. Candy decides to ask Tom for advice on what to do.

Candy volunteers as a temporary substitute nurse and becomes interested in the profession. But it's difficult work - especially when she has to travel up a mountain in a blizzard to assist a woman in labor.

Jimmy, now adopted by Mr. Cartwright, prepares a competition to find out who will be second in command after Candy. Meanwhile, Candy awaits a letter of reply from the Mary Jane Nursing School.

On her way to the school, Candy stops her help an elderly women to the hospital, but ends up spending the entire day accompanying the unusual, bitter old lady as she waits to see the school headmistress.

Candy is thrown into the life of a nurse trainee, and must face prankish patients, her disapproving roommate Frannie, and a strict headmistress.

Candy strives to be a cheerful nurse and ends up popular among her patients. Meanwhile, Frannie seems to be having a hard time with a special patient. Then Candy learns who the patient might be.

The special patient turns out not to be Grandfather William as Candy hoped, but a sour old man. However, after talking around at the hospital, she perceives the reason for his rudeness and wonders if she can help.

Candy receives letters from her friends back at St. Paul's Academy and learns about the possibility of war with Germany. Meanwhile, Mr. McGregor worsens, calling out for 'Miena'. Candy must find Miena to save the man's life.

After transporting Miena to the hospital via foot and carriage, Candy must somehow smuggle the dog into Mr. McGregor's room whilst avoiding Frannie, Mary Jane, and everyone else.

Candy has a hard time coping with the death of her patient, so the headmistress grants her a vacation to Pony's Home. On the way, she encounters the overseer of Mr. McGregor's property who is intent on hunting down Miena.

Candy discovers that Tom is engaged, and that he is not happy about the arranged marriage. Certain she can convince his father to call it off, Candy travels to the ranch, but is shocked when she sees the bride.

While everyone from Pony's Home is at Mr. Cartwright's, Candy discovers Cookie who is supposedly on shore leave. But, little by little, the truth is revealed.

Sent back to America due to the threat of war, the Cornwell brothers pay a visit on Candy. Meanwhile, the nurse must deal with a special patient - a young pianist - with an uncertain ailment.

Candy clashes with her roommate Frannie, the first World War breaks out in Europe, and a new, striking star actor rises in Broadway.

Attempting to keep the truth of her departure from her patients, Candy clashes with Frannie once again. She has yet to learn that medics must work together as a team, especially at the enormous Saint Joanna Hospital in Chicago.

The Cornwell brothers take Candy on a tour of Chicago, along with the other trainee nurses. Due to Frannie's disgust and great-aunt Elroy's harshness, Candy suffers for her adoption by the Adleys.

Candy, Annie, and the Cornwell brothers hide out in a tree house where they speculate the past and future - especially now with the war going on. Unfortunately, thanks to Eliza, the girls may not be able to spend the night at the mansion.

After an exciting morning of pranks and Stear's newest failed invention, Eliza holds a garden party. Nonetheless, Candy and Annie must put up with her and Neil's schemes.

Candy wants to prove to Frannie that she is serious about becoming a nurse. However, she attempts to change her night shift the following day in the hopes of seeing Terry perform at the local theater.

Candy makes it to the theater just in time and sees Terrence. She tries all she can to meet up with him, but ends up lost among the screaming fans before left to wander the cold streets of Chicago.

Candy and Terry scour the city for each other. Searching the hotels and hospitals, they desperately try everything they can to get even a fleeting glimpse of each other before Terry's train leaves the next day.

A new patient is rushed to the operating room. Candy is shocked when she learns the patient's name is Terrence Grandchester and that he fell off a moving train. But she has yet to hear the whole story.

Candy must tend to Charlie in a special ward as well as pay his hospital bill. In an attempt to make the money, Candy takes to making paper flowers. Charlie confronts her on this, and his past is revealed.

A strange boy named Tony regularly enters Candy's room at night to challenge her to a game of poker. However, the hospital records claim he died a month ago. Candy must discover the truth.

The hospitals must send nurses to the front lines and Saint Joanna is no exception. Candy contemplates going after speaking with a former nurse, now crippled. Then Merry Jane calls her students - one will be chosen to go.

Everyone's attitude toward Frannie has changed. On her day off, Candy ventures out along with Stear to find Frannie's family. She is surprised at what she sees.

Nameless, devoid of memories, and suspected of being a foreign spy, the newest patient is sent to the infamous room 0. Candy tries to make her friend comfortable, hoping he will remember her when he wakes.

In order to take charge of Albert, Candy must take the exam to become a certified nurse. Meanwhile, Terry faces a test of his own as he auditions for the role of Romeo in a stage play.

Terry wins the audition, but rumors spread of backstage influences and he is determined to find out the truth. Candy awaits her test results.

With the help of her friends, Candy scours the sleeping city in search for Albert. He may not remember his past, but she does, and uses the clues to discover his whereabouts.

Candy and Albert attempt to find an apartment to rent with little success. Candy writes to Terry, explaining the situation, but jealous Susanna hides the letter from him.

As she cannot resume her nurse duties, Candy tries to find some other work. Back at the apartment, however, she finds Albert missing once again and sets out in search of him - only to find someone else.

Terry finds himself torn between his love for Candy and Susanna's revealed feelings for him. Meanwhile, Candy and Stear attempt a variety of measures to restore Albert's memories.

Candy and friends find Patty's grandmother working overtime for the sheer joy of working. In exchange for her cutting down on it, they agree on 'Grandma Cupid''s plan of reuniting Candy and Terry.

Before going to Broadway, Candy must journey to Florida to deliver some documents. Yet on the way there, Gilbert, a young boy distrustful of medics, enacts his revenge upon her.

Hung up in Florida, Candy meets Karen - a young, skilled actress skeptical of Susanna. Unbeknownst to them, a horrible accident has just occurred in Broadway, nearly taking the lives of Terry and Susanna.

Candy can hardly contain her excitement in going to Broadway and seeing Terry. But Terry finds himself accused of Susanna's disablement. He tries to visit her, but she will not see him.

Stear sees her off, and Candy begins the long trip to Broadway. She imagines her long-awaited reunion with Terrence, but things don't play out quite the way the two anticipate.

Unbeknownst to Candy, Terry makes daily visits to Susanna, who weeps for him and Candy. But the next day at the premiere, the truth is finally revealed.

Cold winds howl over New York. Susanna wishes only to end Terry's suffering. Candy faces the deciding point of what to do for his sake.

Heartbreak, enlistment, exile. In the end, only Albert is there to help Candy in her despair. But not for long.

Candy finds Albert at the questionable Happy Clinic, along with the unusual Dr. Martin. News concerning Stear arrives, and Candy must share the news about Terry.

Everyone warns Candy from going to Graytown. On word of Mrs. Pony's ailing, she ventures to Pony's Home to assist - only to find a different kind of trouble instead.

It's a difficult journey to Graytown, but Candy's needed there. However, there are criminals on the loose, and she finds herself with a highly suspicious travel companion.

Candy and the railroad workers learn a lot from each other. Meanwhile, Dr. Kerry is in search of her brother Arthur, who, guilty of manslaughter, remains a fugitive on the loose.

Upon escaping the mine, Candy runs into Arthur and takes him into hiding. However, the news of her concealing a fugitive leaks, marking her as a possible criminal.

Dr. Kerry is safe, but the sheriff is on his way to arrest Arthur. With the help of the workers and a bit of luck, they plan a daring escape operation.

A murderer is still apprehended, and Candy finds herself stuck with the task of feeding over a hundred men daily as well a finding a foster home for little Belle. Hopefully her friends from Chicago can help.

Belle attempts to set out for Chicago, but, after a near-fatal rescue and Eliza's scheming, it turns out not to be her who will be departing Graytown.

At Pony's Home, Candy finds Jimmy gung ho about the war and wanting to be a soldier. But after stampedes, defeats, and the near-death on Jimmy's own father, Candy confronts the boy on the true nature of war.

Once again, Candy arrives in Neil's time of need, and he finds himself hopelessly infatuated with her. Despite all that Candy and Eliza do, he tries everything he can to go on a date.

The Leagans pull some strings and Candy is kept out of work. Neil finds it the perfect time to prey on her. Meanwhile, Albert recovers his lost memories.

Candy fails herself for being lured into such a trap in the hope of seeing Terrence. But truth is, the real Terry actually isn't too far away.

After Albert steals away, Candy meets up with Patty who shares Stear's latest letter with her. The war is crueler than he expected, and the two girls pray for his safety.

Mrs. Leagan finally consents to Neil's marriage. Before Candy knows it, she is swept away to become his bride - on Grandfather William's order.

Candy finally meets Grandfather William and learns the truth behind everything, from beginning to end.
