At the funeral of his grandfather Souchiro, Daikichi Kawachi sees a young girl, who he later learns is Souchiro's daughter Rin. She has nowhere to go, so Daikichi decides to take her in.

Daikichi finds a temporary nursery to put Rin while he works, but ends up working late.

Daikichi takes Rin to his parents' house, and ponders how to adjust his working life with his new responsibility as a parent.

At nursery, Rin makes friends with a boy named Kouki Kitani, with Daikichi later meeting Kouki's mother Yukari.

Daikichi arranges a meeting with Masako, who suggests that Rin bear his name to make things easier for her.

Rin wonders if there was a tree planted for her on her birth, as Japanese tradition dictates. Daikichi embarks on a search for the tree.

Daikichi's cousin Haruko and her daughter Reina pay an unexpected visit to Daikichi.

On Rin's birthday, Daikichi takes her to see her father's grave, and later to a summer festival.

As the town receives a typhoon alert, Daikichi contemplates investing in some insurance. Later when things get better, Yukari and Kouki come for dinner.

Daikichi seeks help from Yukari when Rin gets ill.

Daikichi visits his parents with Rin. He also looks back on the year he has spent with Rin.
