Threatened by Napoleon's troops, D. João decides to escape to Brazil. This decision will transform the history of the Portuguese colony and of Arrebita, who manages to clandestinely embark.

Intrigues, flattery and games of interest involve the Portuguese court in the tropics. The romance between Arrebita and Ana do Congo begins.

Discovered by Joaquim de Azevedo, Arrebita and Ana do Congo suffer consequences. Meanwhile, D. João resists pressure and puts efforts to stay in Brazil.

Leopoldina arrives in Brazil to marry D. Pedro. Ana do Congo's hideout is discovered, but an unexpected help frees her from the scourge.

Pushed by Portugal's government and with uprisings coming all over Brazil, D. João returns to Portugal, leaving Dom Pedro as prince regent. Arrebita buys Ana do Congo's freedom.

D. Pedro starts a torrid romance with Domitila. Portugal demands the return of D. Pedro and Leopoldina signs the independence, which must be promulgated by D. Pedro.

Brazil being separated from Portugal, Domitila receives the title of Baroness. Ana do Congo faces D. Pedro and Arrebita plunges into shame, while the newspapers criticize the Emperor.

Luís Augusto May suffers an outrage and José Bonifácio is deported. Gonçalves Ledo plots an attack against the Emperor with Arrebita's involvement.

Leopoldina gives birth to the heir to the crown. Domitila receives the title of Marquise and the people's and Republicans' revolt against D. Pedro increases.

Arrebita fights the liberals to overthrow D. Pedro. The Emperor marries again, abdicates the throne in favor of his son and returns to Portugal.
