The rupture (1954-2017): After eight years of bloody battles, the French colonial empire was collapsing. The Dien Bien Phu defeat forced France to relinquish Indochina, then its Indian trading posts. For the colonies it was the long-awaited spark. The Algerian war erupted immediately, and from Africa to the Caribbean, the fire spread.
