John Beecham arrives in Delhi in 1795, determined to become a trader. He hasn't seen his mother for 12 years and she decides to visit him. She brings a traveling companion whom she has chosen to be his wife. The overbearing mother gets a shock when he announces he has a baby, and no sign of a mother of the child yet.

Sam has told John that his brother Daniel is in India. When John finds him, Daniel tells him that their mother told him that John was somewhere else. Daniel has resented John for years for not hearing from him. Chandrika arrives like royalty and throws the house into chaos. John's mother Henrietta has a power struggle with her, and demands to know who she is. Is she the mother of the baby?

The Emperor has postponed John's trading license, at the request of the General. John has a gold statue commissioned for the Empress, in hope that this will speed up the license. Sam betrays John and goes to the General and tells him about it. When they go to the docks, the statue is not there and the escort servant is found murdered. There is a ceremony for the baby August, and Henrietta lets her racism show. John and Daniel go in disguise to find the statue.

Set in India 1795, former British soldier, John Beecham arrives at his new mansion in Delhi with Indian servants and a mixed-race baby. After leaving the British Trade Company, John hopes to get a trading license from the Emperor but runs into opposition from a French General who has earned the trust of the royal family. As John settles into his new home, invited and uninvited guests and family members begin to arrive bringing personal and political complications to Beecham House. The mystery of John's past, the mother of the baby, and why John has arrived in Delhi are revealed throughout the first season as secrets are revealed and characters both clash and form bonds. (the first season ties up some loose ends but ends in a cliffhanger and has not been renewed for a second season)
