An overview of the war years and the 1929 financial crisis. On its liberation in August 1944, Greece was freed from a triple occupation (German, Italian, Bulgarian): 90 % of its villages had been reduced to rubble, 300,000 had died of hunger in Athens. In 1946 civil war erupts.

Founder of the PASOK, Andreas Papandreou came to power in 1981, committed to modernizing Greek society. A leading figure in the fight against the Greek junta, he took the credit for the mythical liberation of Greece for himself. After a series of scandals, the right-wing conservatives won the 1990 elections.
