There will never be agreement over which is the best adapted version of Jane Eyre but this version, Ruth Wilson's first major TV series, may have the most ardent fans. Alongside Toby Stephens, the two deliver fully engaged performances, richly informed by their understanding and empathy with Charlotte Brontë's lovers and their fractured, passionate love story. There are some departures from the canonical path but most are strongly supported by the enthusiastic crowd which kept the imdb discussion board alive for more than ten years after the programmes first aired. It's a classic.
