He was born in Mogra,( Hooghly district, West Bengal, India). His father was a businessman and his mother was a housewife.He started his career as an actor in school drama,then opened his own drama group("Amra Kajon"). He has acted more than twenty five stage dramas and achieved few awards from school, college and different organizations. After completing his education from Calcutta University he joined as an assistant director to the internationally acclaimed director Ritwik Ghatak. Tapan assisted Ritwik Ghatak in directing several movies. Within a few years he started two movie production companies, Joytara pictures and T.S. Films International. His first debut Indian film was _Uplabdhi (Realisation) (1981)_ as a writer, producer and director. After that Tapan has written, directed and produced successfully seven movies. Later on he produced three more movies. At present he is planning and progressing to start two English movies in Hollywood, California, USA.The movie titles are " Chimera" and "Lost Love". For "Chimera" Tapan has signed Billy Zane for the lead role.
