Born in Stockholm, Sweden, to a Dutch father and a German mother. When she was one year old, her parents migrated to Venezuela. She studied Philosophy and Literature at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and Cinema at the Superior Film School of München, Germany. Recognized with 16 international awards and 20 national awards, her second film Manoa (1980) participates at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at Cannes Film Festival. Macu, the policeman's wife, (1987) breaks all box office records in Venezuela, competing with international blockbusters. Maroa (2005) was Venezuela's representative for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Her films are co-productions with Germany, France, Spain, Cuba and Venezuela.
