A track star from NJ, Marty was the third American high-school student to break the 4 minute mile. He competed for the US in the 1968 Olympics, reaching the finals of the 1,500 m race. He won a gold medal at the 1971 Pan Am Games in the same event. Later in his career he also competed in the 5,000 m distance. He retired from competition in 1980.
