The film is about the Cold War, the decline of communism, and the 1956 Hungarian Freedom Fight that was a remarkable turning point for the advancement of democracy. According to several critics and historians, Torn from the Flag is "the best film" ever made about this topic, and the European press declared the movie to be "Hungary's most successful documentary."Klaudia Kovacs made her film with Oscar-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond and legendary cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs.
