After attending Secondary School he learned acting at an agency before private actors school tuition by Willi Maertens from the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg. He got his first engagement at the Landestheater Neuss, where he had his debut in November 1936. After World War II he went back to Hamburg. Since 1949 he was engaged at the famous Ohnsorg-Theater Hamburg, where he stayed until today. In November 2001 he celebrated his 65th stage anniversary as active actor.
