Jean-Paul Paulin (b.1902) was first Jean Choux's assistant. His output is disparate ,with ,now and then,an interesting work. His first effort ,"La Femme Nue " (1932) in spite of its title (the naked woman) ,was not really scandalous, although topless ladies briefly appeared. On the other hand , "L'Esclave Blanc " (1936)featured a topless native who drugged a white man to keep him as her lover :it was risque for the time."L'Abbé Constantin " ,(1933)a remake of a silent movie, was a comedy which owed a lot to Françoise Rosay ,with a daring ending which suggested a Menage a Trois ."Trois De Saint-Cyr " (1938) and "Le Chemin De L'Honneur" (1939) were militarist movies ,which extolled soldiers' courage ,in direct contrast with the deserter from Carné' s "Quai Des Brumes" .During the first days of the Occupation,Maréchal Pétain suggested a movie be made in aid of the Secours national: that was Paulin 's "La Nuit Merveilleuse " (1940),a re-telling of the story of the nativity ,set in Provences ,in the present time .HIs attempt at a fantasy and horror movie "L'Homme Qui Vendit Son Ame" (1943)capitalized on the success of Maurice Tourneur's "La Main Du Diable ",but was not as good as its model."Echec Au Roy"(1943) took place during the Sun King 's final years ,when he was secretly married to Madame De Maintenon. After the war ,he essentially became a producer, emerging now and then with a romantic science-fiction movie,"Le Chateau De La Dernière Chance" (a scientist invents a love serum) or a comedy , "Folie Douce "(1950) ,his last work.He died in 1976 .
