Gregory Boyington served as fighter pilot in the Unites States Marine Corps in World War II. He commanded VMF-214, The Black Sheep Squadron. He shot down 28 Japanese aircraft, for which he received the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor.He was shot down himself on January 3rd, 1944, over the St. George Channel in the Soloman Islands. He was rescued by a Japanese submarine and spent the remainder of the war as a POW.
