Evan Frederick Hengst was born and raised in the small town of Klerksdorp in the North West Province of South Africa. He began acting in youth theater productions throughout his schooling career, and was awarded Best Actor in the play "Maskerade" at the Tshwane Youth Arts Festival. He studied at ACT Cape Town and graduated in 2017.
