Smith left home at age fourteen and eventually settled in Japan with a fake ID. While in Japan she learned to speak fluent Japanese and worked as both a model and a cocktail waitress. Donna was the Playmate of the Month in the March, 1985 issue of "Playboy." Smith and her sister Natalie posed together for a pictorial in and graced the cover of the April, 1985 issue of "Playboy."
