The handsome and muscular Dave Ruby was born David Rubenstein in 1945 in the Bronx in New York City. Of Jewish descent, his father was from Poland while his mother's family came from Russia. When Dave was six years old he moved with his family to Queens, where he was brought up in Kew Garden Hills. Ruby was a jock in high school who played football and baseball as well as ran track. Dave tried out for the major baseball team the New York Mets three times. Following graduation from high school Ruby joined the National Guard in order to avoid the Vietnam draft, worked a series of part time jobs, and made several abortive attempts to become a police officer. Dave attended New York City Community College for a single term and briefly worked in hotel management before deciding on a career as a court reporter.
