Daniel Shriver was born in Van Wert, Ohio. He earned a BA degree with a double major in Theatre and in Marketing from Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. In college he used the stage name Dann Shriver, giving himself an extra N in his name as an homage to his father, Donn Shriver. The spelling stuck for a while, and then Daniel went back to the original spelling. After college he worked full time in marketing for a distributor of non-food items to grocery stores, and for Aeroquip, at the time the largest manufacturer of hydraulic hoses and fittings. Still, in his free time he would travel several hours to go to Detroit, where he was part of the underground comedy scene.
