Boonaa Mohammed is a Canadian spoken-word poet and writer of Oromo descent. His Parents came to Canada as political refugees seeking asylum in the country after their involvement with the Oromo Liberation Movement in Ethiopia.Having grown up in downtown Toronto area and attending Oakwood Collegiate Institute, he excelled in theatre and drama. He graduated at the top of his class and was named Valediction before enrolling in Ryerson University and graduating from the Radio and Television Arts program in 2011.In 2007, Boonaa Mohammed won the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Poetry Face-Off "Best New Artist" award, followed by a playwright residency at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto.He is the founder of Safina Media and wrote and starred in his breakthrough film Tug of War (2015) which documented the lives of two young Muslim men who had become exposed to Radicalized Islam.
