Born to John Engman of Milwaukee, an opera and musical theater performer turned philanthropic consultant, and Kathleen Engman (née McCain) of Los Angeles, an activist, chef and designer who would later be known for her work with her son, Annie's brother, fashion photographer and activist Charlie Engman, the family was based Chicago-adjacent in Evanston, Illinois.Annie attended a public magnet school through elementary and junior high that focused heavily on the arts, allowing her to perform many stage leads at a young age. She was a treble in a touring classical choir, trained in improv with the Piven Theatre Workshop and danced with the Gus Giordano Studio. In high school, she choreographed for Esande Dance Company and cast, choreographed and directed a production of 'A Chorus Line' in preparation for a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting at Millikin University, where she continued to take leads in both classics and devised new works.Midway through her theatrical studies, she trekked in The Yukon Territory followed by a move to Ecuador and then Perú, and deferred from performing to concentrate on other interests of social work, political action, independent documentary filmmaking, writing and design. She enrolled at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington to self-direct a program that incorporated these elements.Annie has since principled films, series, plays, radio shows, commercials and print ads, voice works, music videos, musicals and operas, has sung harmony with bands of most genre, and danced with companies and Latin, African, and samba troupes in Chicago, Olympia, Quito, Salt Lake City, London, Los Angeles and New York.As a casting director, she has populated television, film, theatre, and documentaries, and coaches casts, scene groups and privately. She leads children's workshops, guests academically, and is a script doctor and copy editor. Behind the camera, she has been a director, portrait photographer, documentarian, videographer, set designer and post-production editor. She hosts The Parlour Salon and the banquet Women's Dinner in Los Angeles and New York, as well running two artist residency venues in Upstate New York collectively named The Build.
