His first vocation was that of a bullfighter, but due to his precarious economic situation, he began to work, first as a chimney sweep and then as a jeweler apprentice. His popularity comes after winning a contest of "Cante Jondo" in his native Vallecas (neighborhood of Madrid), and is hired as a protagonist in the Teatro Pavón in Madrid. The Francoist uprising forced him to go into exile in Argentina until 1954.
