Alyce got her start as a singer performing on the streets of Omaha with her parents. She won a 1923 Nebraska beauty contest and later joined the Ziegfeld Follies. During her time in the Follies, she was confused with actress 'Alice' McCormick who was named a respondent in a divorce suit again Florenz Ziegfeld. Alyce changed her name in 1928 to Joy Auburn for numerological reasons.
