One of Australia's most well-known playwrights, Alexander John Buzo was born in Sydney, Australia on July 23rd 1944. He was educated at The Armidale School, in Armidale, New South Wales and The International School in Geneva, Switzerland. He graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1966.Buzo's first play, Norm and Ahmed, was published in 1968 and attracted much attention not only for its verbal superiority but for its controversial subject matter. Since then, he has published many plays including Macquarie (1972), Coralie Landsdowne Says No (1974), Martello Towers (1976), Big River (1980), The Marginal Farm (1983), Shellcove Road (1988) and Pacific Union (1985). In 1972 he was awarded the Australian Literature Society's Gold Medal.Buzo has also written several books, countless articles and reviews and also co-wrote the 1969 film version of Ned Kelly, starring Mick Jagger.Buzo was married in 1968 to Merelyn Johnson and has 3 daughters, Emma (b. 1972), Laura (b. 1978) and Genevieve (b. 1989).
